CT Scans in Houdini

Project Description

The beautiful thing about Houdini is it provides tools and low level access to data which allows you to easily pull in various data sources, manipulate it, and generate just about any kind of geometry or animation. In this case I used CT scan data (black and white image sequences depicting a thin slice of tissue and bone density) to generate 3d models. Unlike optical scanning (e.g. photogrammetry) CT scans not only capture the exterior of a scanned object but also the complex interior of the scanned objects as well. Houdini's tools for reading images and producing, manipulating, and converting volume and mesh data allowed a fairly simple path from scan to animation. The videos below illustrate the conversion from image sequence, to volume, to geometry, to animation.
